Half Double Crochet – US Stitch

In the video tutorial below you will learn how to crochet a U.S. Half Double Crochet stitch. Included is a slip knot, foundation chain, turning chain, U.S. half double crochet stitch on the 1st and 2nd rows.

Half Double Crochet Abbreviation in U.S. Patterns: hdc

UK Equivalent Stitch: half treble crochet (htr)

Half Double CrochetA half double crochet stitch is half the length of a double crochet stitch and double the length of a single crochet.

You could call it the ‘in-betweeny’ stitch!

This is one of my favorite stitches out of the basic stitches because I like the rhythm of this stitch.

You can practically use this stitch for whatever you like whether it be for scarves, mittens, blankets, booties, etc.

For Visual Learners crochet along with me in the Half Double Crochet Stitch Video Tutorial.

To crochet a Half Double Crochet Stitch use the following instructions:

After having made a foundation chain, let’s start the 1st row:

  1. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  2. Insert your hook into the top loop of the 3rd chain stitch from the hook (you are not crocheting into the 1st or 2nd chain stitches from the hook because this will be the turning chain which brings your work up to the height of a half double crochet)
  3. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  4. Draw the yarn back through the chain stitch
  5. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  6. Draw the yarn through the 3 loops on the hook

You’ve just finished your first half double crochet stitch.

Repeat from step 1-6 to crochet half double crochet stitches right across the foundation chain into each chain stitch, except step 2 will change to ‘Place the hook into the next chain stitch’ after you’ve made the 1st stitch.

Once you’ve completed the above, it’s time to start on the 2nd row:

  1. Turn your work
  2. Make 2 chain stitches (this is the crochet turning chain to bring the work up to the height of a half double crochet stitch)
  3. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  4. Insert your hook into both loops of the first stitch from the hook
  5. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  6. Draw the yarn back through the chain stitch
  7. Wrap the yarn over the hook
  8. Draw the yarn through the 3 loops on the hook

You’ve just completed the first half double crochet stitch on the 2nd row.

Half Double Crochet into each of the next stitches along the row until you reach the end by following steps 3 to 8 above, except step 4 will change to ‘Insert your hook into both loops of the next stitch’ after you’ve completed the first stitch.

Tip: Don’t half double crochet into the top of the turning chain, crochet your last stitch into the last stitch that you can see on your row below (1st row).

Repeat Row 2 for all following rows and you will end up with a fabric made of half double crochet stitches.
