Crochet Granny Square with Color Changes

In this Crochet Granny Square with Color Changes Pattern I will show you how to crochet 4 rounds and making a color change on each of those rounds. Make up a gorgeous afghan for yourself, someone else or to donate to charity.

Materials Required

Medium Worsted Weight Yarn, 8 ply or DK

4.5mm/US7 Crochet Hook

Craft Scissors

Yarn Needle

Skill Level

Measurements of Granny Square

10cm x 10cm/4 inches x 4 inches

Stitches & Terms

This pattern is using U.S. stitches and terms. To convert stitches go to my Crochet Stitch Conversion Chart.

ch = chain

ch-1 = 1 chain stitch made on a previous round

ch-3 = 3 chain stitches made at the start of a round

dc = double crochet

rep = repeat

rnd = round

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

sp = space

st = stitch

Basic Crochet Stitch Video Tutorials

 

Written Instructions

Using color A yarn, ch 4, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: ch 4, (3 dc into ring, ch 1) 3 times, 2 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-3 to join.

Finish off.

Using color B yarn, sl st into any ch-1 corner st.

Rnd 2: ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, * ch 1, sk 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, rep from * 2 more times, ch 1, sl st into top of ch-3 to join.

Finish off.

Using color C yarn, sl st into any ch-1 corner st.

Rnd 3: ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, * ch 1, sk 3 dc, 3 dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, rep from * 2 more times, ch 1, sl st into top of ch-3 to join.

Finish off.

Using color D yarn, sl st into any ch-1 corner st.

Rnd 4: ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, * ch 1, sk 3 dc, 3 dc, ch 1, sk 3 dc, 3 dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into corner sp, rep from * 2 more times, ch 1, sl st into top of ch-3 to join.

Finish off.

Pull on center yarn tail to tighten.

Weave in all yarn tails into the back of the square with a yarn needle.
